Visit the University of Otago's New Zealand Marine Studies Centre and Aquarium, situated on the Otago Peninsula, just a 30 minute scenic drive from Dunedin.

From seaweed and shellfish to sharks and seabirds, the marine environment of southern New Zealand is rich and diverse.

Let us roll back the tide to introduce to you the secrets of the Southern Ocean with live displays of native New Zealand species.

Marine CentreMeet the interesting creatures that live beneath the surface, including seahorses, southern pigfish, carpet sharks, bellows fish, ducks bill limpets, seastars, crayfish and crabs.

Peek inside a shark egg, shake hands with an octopus or look at plankton through the microscope.

Meet a life-size replica of a Colossal Squid, and take a virtual dive in a yellow submarine to find out what strange creatures live in the deep canyons off our coast.

Find out why the Otago Peninsula is a mecca for marine wildlife with our knowledgeable and experienced staff.

Kids @ touch tankTouch tanks provide visitors with a hands-on experience. You might tickle a starfish, stroke an anemone or play hide and seek with a hermit crab!

Unlimited visits between 10am - 4.30pm,  $80

 

Guided tours for groups can be arranged at other
times if booked in advance.
Concessions are available for students and seniors
(with ID) and for groups of 15 people.

 

The NZ Marine Studies Centre and Westpac Aquarium are situated on the  Otago Peninsula.
Take the road along the edge of the Otago Harbour.
When you  reach Portobello turn left at the village store.
